Getting Started with WordPress: Your First Website — Session Recap

On Saturday, July 25, WordPress Port Harcourt hosted “Getting Started with WordPress: Your First Website”. A beginner-friendly, hands-on session for small business owners, freelancers, students, and anyone who’s tried WordPress before and felt lost.

No coding required. Just a laptop, a stable connection, and some curiosity.

Why WordPress?

We opened with the number that surprises most newcomers: WordPress powers over 40% of all websites on the internet, more than every other platform combined. It’s free, open-source, and endlessly extendable, with tens of thousands of plugins and themes that let you shape a site into almost anything, from a personal blog to a full online store, without touching a line of code.

What we covered

The session walked through everything you need to go from zero to a live website:

• Choosing hosting and a domain name, what to look for in a host, and how to pick a domain that fits your brand
• Installing WordPress and navigating the dashboard, the control room for your entire site
• Picking and customizing a theme, shaping your site’s look without writing code
• Adding pages, posts, and menus, structuring your content so visitors can find their way around
• Essential plugins every site needs, security, backups, SEO, and performance
• Going live and what to do next, because launch is a milestone, not a finish line

We kept it practical throughout, sharing screens so attendees could follow along step by step, with plenty of time set aside for live Q&A.
